The making

How a rug is made

The process depends on the construction. These are the main stages of making and finishing a rug.

  1. Design and sizing
    Planning

    Design and sizing

The design sets out the pattern, size and colours for the maker. For a custom order, we agree these details with you before making begins.

  2. Dyeing the yarn

    Dyeing the yarn

Yarn is prepared for the design. Where dyed colours are needed, the yarn is dyed in small batches, then dried and wound.

  3. Weaving and knotting

    Weaving and knotting

Handwoven rugs are woven on a loom; hand-knotted rugs are built knot by knot. The time needed depends on the design, size and construction.

  4. Washing

Rugs that need washing are washed after making, then dried. The finishing process depends on the fibres and construction.
