Bedroom Rug Guide: Best Size, Placement and Material by Bed Size

Bedroom Rug Guide: Best Size, Placement and Material by Bed Size

Quick answer: Start by aiming for about 45–60cm (18–24 inches) of rug beside the bed where your feet land. Measure the bed frame, not just the mattress. Wool can feel warm and soft; lighter cotton rugs may suit you too, but check their care instructions.

A bedroom rug should give you a comfortable place to step and fit around the bed and doors. Here is how to compare sizes, layouts and materials.

Rug size by bed size

Bed size Approx. mattress Rug sizes to consider
Single / Twin 90–100 × 190cm 150 × 210cm or two 60 × 120cm runners
Full / Double 135 × 190cm 200 × 300cm; check bed-frame width
Queen 150 × 200cm 200 × 300cm
King 180 × 200cm 240 × 300cm or larger; check orientation
Super King 180–200 × 200cm Check a larger rug or two 80 × 200cm runners

Three ways to place it

  • Full coverage — the rug extends beyond both sides and the foot of the bed. Measure enough width to give you a useful stepping area on each side.
  • Two runners — one narrow rug on each side, where you step out of bed. This can suit a smaller room or let you use less rug.
  • Foot-of-bed only — a smaller rug at the foot of the bed. This adds texture but does not give you a soft landing at the sides.

For a rug under the bed, decide whether the bedside tables will sit on it too. For runners or a foot-of-bed rug, position them where you will actually step. Keep doors clear and check that edges lie securely.

Choosing the material

Wool can be a good choice for warmth and a soft feel. Check the pile and weave, as wool rugs can feel quite different. Cotton is often lighter. Some cotton rugs are washable, but only wash one if the product instructions allow it. Jute and hemp give a firmer, more textured feel. If you prefer softness beside the bed, compare a sample or consider layering using our rug layering guide.

Colour and pattern

Start with your bedding, flooring and the light in the room. Sand, oat and taupe can be easy to combine; a pattern may suit you just as well. For more ideas, see our guide to choosing a rug you will want to keep.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug goes under a queen bed?
200 × 300cm can be a starting point, usually with the wider dimension across the bed. Measure your actual frame and check how much rug remains visible on each side.

Should a rug go under the whole bed or just show at the sides?
Either can work. Putting the rug under the bed ties the arrangement together; runners beside it use less rug. Choose around your stepping space, bedside tables and door clearances.

What's the best rug material for a bedroom?
Wool is worth considering for softness and warmth; cotton can offer a lighter feel. Check samples and care instructions rather than assuming every rug in a fibre feels the same.

Can you use runners instead of one large rug in a bedroom?
Yes — a runner on each side of the bed is a practical, budget-friendly alternative to one large rug, especially in a smaller room.
